This week I want to talk about body confidence. The relationship we have with our bodies is a complicated one. I rarely meet people who are 100% totally happy with the way they look. Our bodies are amazing things that carry us through our lives. The heart beats and the lungs breath, most people can walk from A to B without even thinking about it.

Yet, I used to give so much energy into hating my body because it didn’t look like someone else’s, or that it had imperfections. It didn’t matter if I lost weight - the one thing I thought would fix my woe - I still had the overwhelming feeling that my body just wasn’t good enough.

Thankfully today it’s not like that.

It’s taken some time but I now have a deep appreciation for my body, and I am much less preoccupied with the way I look. I feel much happier and even though I still have off days, accepting my body as it is has given me the freedom to be able to enjoy life.

I want to share with you 5 of the things that I have done that I feel have helped me the most to feel better about my body. This list is not definitive! I can only share what has worked for me. I encourage you to start here and continue exploring what else makes you feel good about yourself.

1. Gratitude - list three things you are grateful for about your body. Maybe it has survived an illness or brought a new life into the world. I used to always focus on the things I thought my body was lacking, it wasn’t until I focused on what my body had done for me I realised how much I had to be thankful for.

2. Listen to compliments, and I mean really listen to them. Repeat them back to yourself, write them down. Next time you are using that negative voice to talk to yourself about your body, repeat the compliments you received.

3. Get a strength goal. Feeling strong is empowering. Being able to lift something or squat something that you couldn’t do a few months ago is a tangible sign of strength.

4. Find a way to measure health that is nothing to do with scale. That could be sleeping better, lower blood pressure, lower cholesterol, not getting out of breath going up the stairs or touching your toes.

5. Get out of your head, no not like that! When that critical voice just won’t shut up pick up the phone and call someone, ask them how they are. When my negative voice gets stuck on a downwards loop often the only way I can break that is to talk to someone else.

Working out is just a small piece of the body confidence puzzle, mindset is key. If you want to work with a PT that understands and can help you feel more confident about yourself then get in touch! maxineellison@me.com 07747676414
